Mission Brewery – IPA
I recently moved to a new house. Along with all the boxes, furniture, and other belongings I had to move, there was one thing I could not move with me… My local beer shop. I was fortunate enough to have a great beer distributor near my old house that carried a ton of craft beer. So when I settled into the new digs, I was on a mission to find a new beer distributor. After a few failed attempts I found a great new distributor and celebrated my victory with a case of Mission Brewery IPA. I have had this beer many times before and knew that this was just the treat I needed. I brought the case home, put it in my #BeerFridge and waited a few hours for them to chill down. That night I poured myself a glass of one of the best IPAs I have ever had. Mission IPA pours a nice golden color with a hefty aroma of….. Wait… screw talking about what this beer smells and looks like. Just … Continue reading
Keegan Ales – Hurricane Kitty
This one is for the little guys. I never heard of Keegan Ales, a small Kingston, N.Y. brewery that’s been around since 2003, until I randomly selected their IPA, oddly named Hurricane Kitty, for our random six-pack series. Little Keegan Ales has but around 800 followers on Twitter, which is on par with their lineup, just three year-round offerings. Well, let’s raise a glass to the little guys. Hurricane Kitty – as you might guess, you’ll think about that name the entire time you drink this – is a legitimate IPA. It’s a dark orange, hoppy, crisp beer. It’s not very full bodied, nor does it boast a ton of outside flavor. But it’s well hopped and well brewed. What it tries to do, it does well. It’s like a Honda Civic, no one’s dream car but a ride many people are happy to have. The grainy, hoppy flavor is easily the most prominent in this brew, which isn’t bad, as long as you’re not expecting a lot more out of it. … Continue reading
Abita – Turbodog
I walk into the liquor store downtown expecting just to pick up a Yards Pale Ale, or something else that’s readily available at most stores around me regardless of if they make an effort to stock craft beers or not. See, I live in a tiny little beach resort and that liquor store is known more for its jacked up prices that say, “If you’re going to be an obnoxious tourist, you’re going to pay for it.” They also don’t care much about the selection beyond the staples and a couple of Pennsylvania-based craft beers, since there’s a large amount of Pennsylvanians coming into my town and parking like ass hats. So imagine my joy when I walk in and I’m greeted the site of Rogue, Stone, Flying Dog, Sierra Nevada and Dogfish Head boxes! The whole gang was there! They even had bottles of the brew that made our little website very famous for a day – Captain Sig’s Northwestern Ale by Rogue. And the prices were good. I picked up … Continue reading
Allagash – Dubbel
So we had this idea to make random six-packs as a means of blind taste testing some beers. Well, if it was a like a blind date, one of my picks was like showing up at the restaurant to find out your date was the beautiful girl you shared a brief moment with a couple years ago you’ve been dying to reconnect with. I gots me a bottle of Allagash Dubbel! (The excitement made me revert to having a lack of grammatical prowess.) I’ve had the beer before, actually in a bomber bottle on a night of tasting new random beers with a friend. It was the highlight of that night too. Dubbel is a year-round offering that comes in large and regular bottles. It tips the scale at 7 percent ABV, but it tastes as if it’s higher. It pours a deep red with minimal head. It’s refreshing yet complex and a little dry at the finish, but not so much you notice unless you’re trying to pick out the flavors … Continue reading
